THE GERALD DIRKS SCHOLARSHIP FOR ADVANCEMENT OF BRAILLE LITERACY

The Gerald Dirks Scholarship for the Advancement of Braille Literacy was established in 2013 to recognize Dr. Gerald Dirks' passion for Braille throughout his distinguished life.Dr. Dirks, who died suddenly in 2008, was a professor of political science at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario,Canada where he combined a successful teaching career with research and writing. His named scholarship honours Dr. Dirks' commitment to Braille literacy, inclusive education for blind children and the expansion of employment opportunities for blind adults in Africa. It is anticipated that one or more scholarships of approximately $1,000 will be awarded annually to the successful candidates.

If you share our passion for braille and literacy, please help The World Braille Foundation to create new opportunities for inclusive education and to help train young blind adults for employment.

Throughout Africa 90 per cent of blind children do not attend school.
